How is Sage Essential Oil is Different from Clary Sage Essential Oil?
What are their uses?
Sage essential oil, also known as Dalmatian sage oil, is a clear, medium-consistency oil with fresh, herbaceous, fruity, and camphorous odor. The essential oil manufacturers obtain it by steam distillation of sage leaves, buds, and flowers (botanical name - Salvia officinalis). The major constituents of the oil are camphor, thujone, and 1,8-cineole, and they make it a beneficial wellness potion. The oil blends well with lime oil, cardamom oil, spearmint essential oil, rosemary oil, and sandalwood essential oil for healthcare purposes.
Benefits
The presence of thujone and cineole compounds adds expectorant properties and helps alleviate respiratory congestion and sore throat. The compounds also help reduce headaches, muscular aches, joints, and menstrual crampings. The oil also relieves emotional exhaustion, mental fatigue, and nervousness. Its herbaceous nature aids in indigestion, and its dermal application treats acne.
Ways to use Sage
Essential Oil
1. Mix 5-6 drops of sage oil into a hot water vessel. Cover the face and vessel with a thick towel and inhale its steam for ten minutes with required breaks (as per tolerance). Repeat this process twice or thrice a day in flu, nasal, and throat congestion.
2. Add 3-4 drops of sage oil, two drops of spearmint essential oil, and two drops of lime oil to 12 ml water in the diffuser for uplifting fragrance. Diffuse this mixture during morning and evening every day for mental relief.
3. Blend five drops of sage oil and 7-10 ml sesame oil and apply the mixture to aching body parts in circular motions.
4. Mix two drops of sage oil and one drop of sandalwood essential oil and apply this blend to acne to heal them quickly.
Cautionary Note - As sage oil contains 25 to 50% intense pungent thujone compounds, the users need to use it sparingly without touching sensitive areas.
Clary Sage Essential Oil
Clary sage essential oil is a pale yellow thin oil derived from the flowers and leaves of the clary sage plant (Salvia sclarea) by steam distillation. Its major natural components are linalyl acetate, linalool, sclareol, and a-terpineol, and it emits an earthy, herbaceous, and floral aroma with slightly fruity notes. People use it for perfumery, hair care, and skincare purposes. Some consider it estrogenic due to its sclareol compounds that help alleviate feminine reproductive health, while others appreciate it as an aphrodisiac.
Benefits
Clary sage oil treats minor skin ailments such as acne,
burns, inflammation, and dryness, and its application stops hair loss and
dandruff. It also eases menstrual pain and regulates menstrual flow. The oil
helps treat intestinal cramping, flatulence, colic, muscular aches, and cough.
Note- Clary sage
oil is safer than sage oil in the application, but its dilution in carrier oil
works better.
Ways to Use Clary
Sage Oil
1. Add a few drops of clary sage essential oil to regular skincare
products and hair oil and use it regularly for healthy skin and hair.
2. Mix 5-7 drops of clary sage oil and 10 ml olive oil and massage the blend on the abdomen and aching parts.
